Top Gear visits the farm for next Stig

Stig Farm

A Stig who's identity isn't a secret? Why, that just won't do, will it? As you might expect, then, Top Gear presenters Clarkson, Hammond and May are hot on the trail of a replacement Stig, and they've apparently found just the place: a farm. And not just any farm... a farm where Stigs are cultivated, no less.

Clarkson has reportedly found a perfect candidate who will be unveiled at the Top Gear Live event at Earl's Court in London next week. It's not known whether this new Stiggy will be the final model used for the next series of episodes, leaving only one real question left that still needs answering: What color will the next Stig be?

We vote pink. Sabine, anyone?

BMW M3 Competition Package Fire Orange is only for Japan

BMW M3 Competition Package Fire Orange

The Japanese are known for producing reliable, affordable, practical cars. That doesn't mean, however, that they can't appreciate a good thing when they see it. Following up BMW's release of the red Tiger M3 in China, the German automaker has released the Competition Fire Orange in the Land of the Rising Sun.

In addition to the distinctive orange alluded to in the name, the M3 recieves new 19 inch wheels, with blacked out kidney grills, chrome exhaust tips, and hood air intakes. That air is going to a special version of the 420 bhp V8 that normally powers M3s, and will be assisted by the dual clutch transmission BMW uses in its M series cars.

Tack on the carbon fiber on the exterior mirros and the carbon fiber interior trim, and this currently unpriced special model is certain to be a hit- even if it's not what we normally think of when we think "Japanese car".

2011 Subaru WRX STI vs Robot Spider - Click above to watch video after the jump

Needless to say, we're already fans of the 2011 WRX STI. Subaru, in turn, is apparently a fan of 80's pop band A-Ha and their breakthrough video for Take On Me. A new ad for the sporty Japanese sedan shows car versus robot spider duking it out in sketchbook form. The ad touts the WRX STI as "pure performance", while the 305 horsepower turbocharged boxer and symmetrical all-wheel drive system are clearly useful in fleeing a fate of mechanized death.

Check out the ad after the jump, as well as the A-Ha video for a refresher on life in 1985. Thanks for the tip, Kevin!

2010 Bugatti Veyron versus BMW S 1000 RR

Car guys insist that their four-wheeled machines are as fun as any motorcycle. The two-wheeled, leather-clad bike folks laugh at this notion, then scream off into the twisties at 9,000 rpm. The discussion can go back and forth until both parties are blue in the face. Inside Line decided it would be fun to put two powerful examples, one car and one motorcycle, to the test. These aren't just run-of-the-mill vehicles, either: In one corner is a 2010 Bugatti Veyron while in the other sits a 2010 BMW S 1000 RR. The battleground? Forest roads around Molsheim, France

The Veyron obviously has the power advantage, thanks to its quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 engine that produces 1,001 horsepower. The 190-horsepower BMW, however, has a huge weight advantage and the agile bike can get around any Citro├źn-shaped obstacles that it might come across.

The staff at Inside Line give the nod to the bike, for a number of valid reasons. It makes more sense in a day-to-day atmosphere, can slip through traffic, and when the luggage rack is applied it has more cargo capacity. The S 1000 RR also gains an edge when comparing maintenance costs. Changing a tire on a bike isn't too much of a hit to the wallet, but to change the full set of rubber on the Bugatti costs $90,000. Furthermore, there are only two machines in the world capable of handling that job -- one in France and another here in the US.

Regardless of the outcome, the pair both represent unique forms of engineering excellence and the real winner of the shootout is Inside Line. Getting to spend time with either vehicle is a treat, but getting to do it on a scenic French road is a dream. Head on over to Inside Line to live vicariously through their lucky contributor.

It took them so long, but finally Chevrolet confirmed the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible for debut at this year’s Los Angeles Autoshow in November. They’ve even released a picture of the car as a sort of teaser. The other fact that’s confirmed is the starting price of the car which is $30,000 USD, a bargain really for something this cool. The engine lineup and other specs are yet to be announced.

2011 MINI Countryman WRC

2011 MINI Countryman WRC: "

Mini is the third company to reveal their WRC car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, and they have the most interesting car of them all. As you know in 2011 Mini will make a big comeback to the world rally championship after many years of absence. But they are not coming back with the original Mini, they’ve decided to prepare a rally version of the new Countryman crossover vehicle.

This Mini too, like all the other 2011 WRC cars, is powered by a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder Di turbo-charged engine. This unit has proved to be up to the task during the first shakedown in Portugal. it, in its standard form, develops 135 kW / 184 bhp, and accelerates the MINI Cooper S Countryman from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. For the Mini WRC it should be able of putting out around 300 bhp.

The power transmission takes place via an Xtrac 6-speed, sequential gearbox. For its outings on the rally stages, the MINI Countryman chassis has been fitted with a roll cage developed by Prodrive, which exceeds the strict safety

‘The Paris Motor Show is the perfect stage, on which to launch our MINI WRC,’ says Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing. ‘The response to our announcement that MINI will return to the world of rallying next year was very positive. The FIA World Rally Championship is the pinnacle of rallying, making it the ideal platform for demonstrating the competitive spirit of our brand. The development of the car is running on schedule, and the preparations for the world championship are in full swing. The MINI Countryman production model provided the ideal basis for our new world championship challenger.’

The 2011 World Rally Championship will see the new MINI WRC contesting in six of 13 scheduled rounds, with MINI competing in the full 2012 season. In addition, Prodrive plans to make available customer versions to independent teams for use in the championship.

Rallying is hardly unchartered territory for MINI. In the past this popular motor sporting genre decisively shaped the image of the brand. The MINI Cooper S became a true legend through its numerous victories on Rally Monte Carlo. The European Rally Championship, too, saw MINI notch up serial successes. ‘MINI can look back on a successful tradition in rallying,’ says Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht, Senior Vice President Brand Management MINI. ‘The interest in motorsport among the present generation of MINI customers is massive. The WRC provides an excellent communications platform for the MINI Countryman, upon which the MINI WRC is based.’

Prodrive, an experienced motorsport operation, was chosen as the partner in the quest to continue MINI’s success story. The company, founded by David Richards, is viewed as one of the most respected and successful in rallying. ‘This project is a truly passionate opportunity,’ believes Richards. ‘MINI is a cult brand which left a lasting impression during its previous motorsport campaigns. We are both extremely happy and proud to be on board as a partner when MINI returns to rallying. We aim to use 2011 as a preparatory year, amassing experience in order to ensure we are fully competitive from the start of the following season. But let’s not underestimate the task ahead of us nor the stiff competition we will face on the way, however our target is firmly set on winning the World Championship title again with MINI.’

Prodrive was founded in 1984, and has established itself as one of motorsport’s leading independent teams. Currently employing over 500 staff, the company is based in Banbury (GB). Among other successes, Prodrive has to date won six World Rally Championships, five British Touring Car titles, and scored three class victories in France’s classic Le Mans 24 Hours.

Kris Meeke has been confirmed as the first driver to compete for Prodrive in the MINI WRC. The rally ace from Dungannon (GB) first came to prominence when he won the British Junior Rally Championship in 2002. Numerous victories and titles were to follow. With support from his long-term mentor and former rally world champion, the late Colin McRae (GB), Meeke has been able to successfully establish himself on the rally scene. The Northern Irishman celebrated his most recent success last year, when he won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC).
